BMW i4 eDrive35 electric car in test: I'd take it

"Why do you like the i4 so much?" Because BMW is bringing an old virtue to the start: a car that passes the head count and still hangs on in the heart.

We all know the problem: you want to cook, but you're out of cheese, and the real cheese is only available in, say: Maastricht, round trip 862 km. Normally, you'd drive that with the six-cylinder diesel Defender, it'll tear it up on a butt cheek. But oh my! The wife took the Defender to drive to work! The son, meanwhile, has taken the family vehicle, the Neoplan Skyliner (also with a six-cylinder diesel), to swing to Lloret de Mar with his buddies! There is only the E-limousine purchased for regulars' table trips. But with electric, you would have to look for this distance, how and where to charge best, that sucks totally. Like others, BMW addresses this widespread problem with a fully automatic charging planner, which I wanted to test extensively using the i4 eDrive35, because it has the smallest battery in the i4 series.

The i4 has become quite a car. We already knew how it would be received because the platform had already been well received. (Bild: Clemens Gleich)

Part of the question "Why is it good?" can be answered by its origin. The i4 shares a platform with models like the 4s, a mixed platform for internal combustion and battery cars (CLAR II). This has the disadvantage that it is not only built for a battery-electric drive, which consequently leaves a lot of empty space at the front. BMW saves a frunk. I can well do without it, but such a plastic bucket always gives a few PR points, BMW. The platform has the advantage that all the experience from the other cars flows into it. The i4 rolls out and anyone who likes the 3 series or other 4 series will love it immediately. I like that the i4 leaves some cW points for design (cW=0.24). Because as the aerodynamic soap-piece shape brings range, it's becoming more common. For sedans, BMW is going the Tesla route here with appealing design and that will find its friends, just as the soap bars find their friends through function.
